Pomeranian Dewclaws
Overview

What is a dewclaw?  A nail that grows on near the top of the dog's paw.   Some breeds, such as the Chihuahua, will have the dewclaws removed by the breeder before the puppy is sold.

With the Pomeranian, you may or may not have a puppy or dog with the dewclaws intact.  Should these be removed?  What about trimming intact dewclaws on the Pomeranian?  Let's discuss this important topic.

The dewclaw grows on the side of the Pomeranian's paw, above the other nails.
Should You Have Dewclaws Removed on a Pomeranian?

You do not always need to have the dewclaws on the Pomeranian removed.  It will depend on your particular dog. The main reason that owners have their Pomeranian's dew claws removed, is the worry that they will "catch" on something, such as the carpet.  This can be very painful for the dog and could lead to possible infection.

Dewclaws are also removed if they are not growing in properly.  This can interfere with the dog's activities such as playing and exercising.

Your decision about whether or not to remove the dewclaws should depend on:

    * Are they getting the way?  Is your Pomeranian getting the caught onto things?
    * Are they loose, dangling or growing out of place?

If so, then it is recommended to have them removed for the sake of the Pom.

Will having the dewclaws removed interfere with showing a dog at a conformation event?

No. Per AKC standards, it is acceptable for the Pomeranian dewclaws to be removed on both front and rear paws.

Proper Removal

If your Pomeranian's dewclaws are catching on things and causing pain...and you opt to have them removed, let's discuss the procedure.

This is done by an experienced veterinarian and done so under general anesthesia. For this reason, many owners choose to have this done at the same time that spaying or neutering is performed...so that the Pomeranian only needs to have the anesthesia one time.

It is much easier on the dog to have the dewclaws removed when they are a young puppy.  As a puppy, the dewclaws are small, more like fingernails and usually do not even require stitches.

When removed on an older dog, there is a much larger piece that needs to be removed. The dewclaws have now grown to be actually part of a dog's "extra toe" and the entire piece, toe and claw, are usually removed.  For this reason,  the anesthesia is given and the dog will need to receive stitches.  Older dogs seem very prone to licking at the stitches, interfering with recovery time.

Since this is a big decision, we highly recommend only having this done if the dew claws are presenting a big problem to your Pomeranian, catching on things and causing your dog pain.

If you keep the dew claws on your Pomeranian, do keep a couple of things in mind that trimming the dewclaws on a regular basis is very important. You will not want to allow them to grow long.
