Good & Bad Pomeranian Breeders

There are good Pomeranian breeders that do so for the love of the breed. There are bad Pomeranian breeders that do so for primarily financial reasons.  There are ugly, unethical Pomeranian breeders that do not even recognize that Pomeranians have a soul.

Choosing a Pomeranian breeder is a huge decision.  If you choose a good Pomeranian breeder, you most likely will have a wonderful healthy dog.  Buying a dog from a money hungry Pomeranian breeder increases your chances of having a dog with health issues.  Opting for a Pomeranian breeder who is down right evil will be promoting puppy mills, neglect of animals, mistreatment of dogs and sometimes even the slaughter of innocent Pomeranians.

Finding a Good Breeder

There are many Pomeranian breeders in the world, and it is important to know how to spot a good one. One element of this whole issue is the words Miniature Pom, Teddy Bear Pom and the like.  There is no such breed.  A Pomeranian is definitely small enough of a dog, there can't be a breed that is even smaller.  Most Poms will be 3-7 pounds when fully grown; it is unnatural to have a dog that weighs a pound!  Even though this type of breed does not exist, you can still have a good Pomeranian breeder who sells them. Why? Because the world is used to hearing these terms, so many people hear the term "miniature Pomeranian", that Pomeranian breeders reply to that demand.  They can still be a good Pomeranian breeder if they sell regular Poms but to please the public's need for tiny creatures, they call the miniature Pomeranians.

If you find a Pomeranian breeder who sells miniature Pomeranians,  Teddy Bear Poms or any Pom that is called a smaller version of the actual breed of Pomeranian, as long as they have all of the qualities of a good Pomeranian breeder, you should feel confident if you ask the right questions. You can bring up the subject.  You can tell the breeder that you understand that there is only one breed of Pomeranian and that you want to be sure that the miniature Pomeranian you have is actually a normal, regular dog.

That being said, you must be aware of the bad Pomeranian breeders who actually go ahead and try to breed a miniature Pomeranian.  These Pomeranian breeders who only care about money will do some horrible things to make their dogs small.  They will force a pregnant dog to have her puppies before she is ready. They will force two runt dogs into breeding with each other, hoping that it will produce unnaturally small pups.  They may also starve the mother and her pups.  All of these things will, of course, make the dog sickly and even if the dog looks cute, they can have major health problems

A Pomeranian breeder that breeds pups for dog stores most likely is actually the owner of a Puppy Mill.  A Puppy Mill is a disgusting factory that mass produces dogs. The animals are stacked on top of one another, cages upon cages.  Urine and feces drip down from one cage into the cage below Dog are fed garbage.  Dogs that are not deemed "perfect" are murdered.  Pups are ripped away from their mothers before they are ready.  These dogs are one day washed up and brought to a dog store.  No one realizes that the cute "dog in the window" came from an evil Puppy Mill.

The search

You must first search for Pomeranian breeders.  Make a list of those that seem interesting to you.  Price is not really relevant.  A good Pomeranian breeder may charge more because she does not over-breed her dogs and needs to make a living.  A bad Pomeranian breeder may charge more because he is a money hungry and only cares about how fat his wallet is.   After you search for Pomeranian breeders and you have a list of ten or so, you should look over their web sites and see what they have to say.  If a Pomeranian breeder claims that all of their Poms are miniature and will not grow over 2 pounds as an adult, move on to the next one!  A fully grown 2 pound Pomeranian equals a dog that will have major, major health problems.

After looking at what they have to show you on the Internet, it is time to listen to what they have to say. Especially if a breeder is a good distance away from your home, only keep Pomeranian breeders that take the time to speak to you on the phone and answer all of your questions.  Gut instinct will automatically cross some Pomeranian breeders off the list and this will leave you with a few, three or four, that you should try to visit.

If a Pomeranian breeder is within driving distance, visit without the intention of buying.  Your visit will be to inspect the property and see if it is a small, clean and caring home for dogs or if it is otherwise.  Meet with the breeder and look at the dogs she has.  If you see a dog that you really fall in love with, only bring him home if the Pomeranian breeder has papers to give you, medical records and a really good Pomeranian breeder will give you lots of advice.

If the Pomeranian breeder you find is very far away, make sure that you are absolutely in head-over-heels love with a Pomeranian you see on the breeder's web site before you pay to travel long distances. Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.  If all goes well and the breeder has a clean, well run and honest business you may be bringing home a Pom.  If the breeder does not live up to your hopes, chalk it up to a loss.  No matter how badly you feel for his pups, do not buy from an unethical breeder, you will just be giving him more money to stay in business. Good Pomeranian breeder exist just about everywhere.  If you do a bit of searching, you are most certain to find a great one
