Pomchi
Overview

What is a Pomchi?  The Pomchi is a cross between a Pomeranian and a Chihuahua.  Crossing dog breeds is not new.  It has been done since the beginning of domesticated dogs.  What IS new is that this practice  of producing mixed breeds is now being dubbed as having a "Hybrid Dog" or a "Designer Dog".   However, one must realize that a Pomchi is a made up name, given to the puppies of two dogs who should not have been bred together.

To put it bluntly, the Pomchi (Or Chi-apom or Chipom ) is just a "cutesy" name for a mongrel dog.  This dog is not recognized by the AKC or any other legitimate kennel group.

Once this cross became popular and the public was drawn in by the words "Designer Dog", two clubs were formed...The American Canine Hybrid Club and the Designer Dogs Kennel Club.  These are not respected clubs...They were formed to make the impression that the Pomchi was a recognized official dog breed.  However, just because a group called "Designer Dogs Kennel Club" "accepts" the Pomchi, does not make it a real dog breed.

Crossing breeds does harm to the official breeds.  Even time a Pomeranian and a Chihuahua are bred together, it weakens the bloodlines of those official dogs.  If this practice continues, we may find that one day the Pom and/or the Chi are extinct lines.

One of the saddest elements of all of this cross breeding is the fact that the so-called Pomchi can never become an official dog breed (You see, supporters of these dogs argue that cross breeding was done centuries ago to produce the breeds that we know of today)...This is true.  However, one Pomchi never looks the same as another one.  Therefore, there can never be a standard of what the dog is to look like.  There can never be a legitimate standard of appearance.

There are 2 types of Chihuahua, short coat (also called smooth coat) and long coat.  Sometimes, a breeder will have the sire (male) be a Pomeranian and sometimes a breeder will use a Chihuahua as the sire.  This causes results that strongly vary from litter to litter.  One never knows what the result will be.

Health Issues

Another aspect to consider is that each dog breed has its own set of health issues that it is prone to.  When you take a Pomeranian and a Chihuahua and mix them together, you have now doubled the possible health issues...As the puppies will be prone to the issues of both breeds.

Appearance

Let's take a look at just how different the Pomchi can be:

This Pomchi has an appearance that is very similar to the Pomeranian. If this is the type of puppy that you are interested in, please consider getting a Pomeranian.  You can learn all about the Pom here and if you feel that you are ready to look into puppies, you can look at our exclusive list of Chosen Breeders

This Pomchi is has an appearance that is extremely similar to the Chihuahua.  In fact, some people would look at this puppy and believe that it was a Chi.  The only outstanding difference is the shape of the snout. Obviously, increased health issues cannot be seen by outward appearance.   This puppy is a cross between the Pom and short (or smooth) coat Chihuahua.  If this is the type of puppy that interests you, there is no reason to not consider obtaining a purebred Chihuahua puppy.  You may be interested in looking through the most popular Chihuahua informational site in the world, PetChiDog.  You can go there by clicking here.
