What is a Pomchi? The Pomchi is a cross between a Pomeranian and a Chihuahua. Crossing dog breeds is not new. It has been done since the beginning of domesticated dogs. For example, the Pomeranian was once a failrly large Spitz sled dog, whose only color was white. Over time, it was bred with much smaller dogs, thus producing the breed that we know and love today.
What IS new is the deliberate practice of breeding together 2 certain purebreds in order to produce a "Hybrid Dog" or a "Designer Dog". However, one must realize that a Pomchi is not an officially recognized dog breed yet. We say yet, because many groups are working towards this as a goal. This dog is not recognized by the AKC or any other large dog breed registration.
The Pomchi (Or Chi-apom or Chipom ) is the term for a dog who has 1 parent who is a purebred Pomeranian and the other parent who is a purebred Chihuahua.
Once this cross became popular and the public was drawn in by the words "Designer Dog", two clubs were formed...The American Canine Hybrid Club and the Designer Dogs Kennel Club. They were formed for Pomchi lovers and to have a large force working towards acceptance.
There are pros can cons for cross breeding. ...Crossing breeds does harm to the bloodlines of the purebred dog breeds. It weakens the lines and does not promote the goal of breeding, which is to produce dogs who meet the standard and decrease flaws in the line.
Those who are pro do make a legitimate statement that all the dogs we know and love today started out as a different type of dog.... And it was only through select and careful breeding with other varieties did the "official" breeds gain acceptance.
One of the obstacles in the way of having the Pomchi accepted as a recognized dog breed is the fact that at this time, the standard varying to a large degree. One Pomchi rarely looks the same as another one. This is due in part from the breeding of both short and long coats....And also, no guidelines set up as to the size of the dam and sire.
There are 2 types of Chihuahua, short coat (also called smooth coat) and long coat. Sometimes, a breeder will have the sire (male) be a Pomeranian and sometimes a breeder will use a Chihuahua as the sire. This causes results that strongly vary from litter to litter. One never knows what the result will be. Proponents of this designer dog hope to have strict guidelines so that a legitimate appearance standard can be the goal of breeders.
Health Issues
Some say that hybrid vigor keeps the Pomchi healthy. Others say that this dog has the risks of inherited disease from both parents. Studies are not conclusive.
