Maybe your Pomeranian seems to sleep all the time or perhaps just as you are tucking yourself under the covers in your warm cozy bed, your Pomeranian is wide awake. You may wonder if your Pomeranian sleeps too much or not enough. Some dog owners find themselves with a dog that got into a very bad sleeping pattern; thus reversing their time clock and being awake at night and sleeping most of the day away.

Do you wonder where of the three basic sleeping areas is the best? Your dog may sleep in the bed with you, your dog may sleep in his own soft comfortable doggie bed or your dog may sleep just about any where he chooses to lay his head down.

How Much Sleep Does a Pomeranian Need?

Do dogs sleep a lot? The answer is a big yes. Should the Pomeranian breed sleep a lot? As a small toy breed dog, a Pomeranian does not sleep quite as much as a larger dog; however they do need quite a bit of sleep.

Normal sleeping habits for this dog is to sleep a total of 13 to 15 hours per day. This sleeping time will include the 8 or so hours that a dog will normally sleep when their owners are in bed and also naps through out the day. Although a Pomeranian will sleep much more than a person, they do wake up more often. This points to a dog not entering the deepest phase of sleep: REM sleep. Dogs can and do have REM sleep. This means Rapid Eye Movement and it is the deep phase of sleep in which someone is dreaming and when they are having a dream, their eyes will move underneath closed eye lids. Dogs have been shown to have REM.

What do dogs dream about? Most scientists will say that a dog will dream of images and noises based on experiences they had while awake. The reason that dogs sleep is the same reason that humans must: A Pomeranian's brain fills up with information all through out the day and their brain needs to "reset" itself by purging those memories and information by having dreams.

If your Pomeranian is sleeping any where from 12 hours to 16 hours a day, you do not need to be concerned. However, if your Pomeranian is sleeping less than 12 or more than 16, you should bring your dog to the vet for a complete checkup. Sleep deprivation for a dog is just as brutal as it is for a person. Alternatively, if your Pomeranian is sleeping much more than normal, this could indicate a medical issue such as diabetes or low thyroid functioning.

Where Your Pomeranian Snoozes

There are some dogs that will seem to sleep just about anywhere. However, a dog is actually very picky about where they sleep. A small dog such as a Pomeranian has a need to feel safe and secure. They are going to want to sleep in a spot that gives them this feeling so that they can rest properly. In addition, even though a Pomeranian is a very small dog, they originally were quite a larger breed. Poms originated from medium sized sled dog. They will have the instinct to sleep not only near their owner but in a spot in which they can protect the home. Yes, your Pomeranian has an instinct to protect you!

You may wish to have him or her sleep in your bed. Who can blame you? However, this might not always be a good idea. And how you train your dog to sleep will be very hard to break once they are in a sleeping habit. So, think wisely before allowing your Pomeranian into the bed with you.

If you have the bed to yourself now, this may not always be so. And your future sleeping partner may not feel comfortable with your Pomeranian sleeping in the bed. Also, of course a Pom is very small and fragile. You certainly do not want to roll on top of them by accident while you are sleeping. You also do not want to accidentally kick or push your dog off of the bed while sleeping.

Because a Pomeranian likes to have their own special spot, be near their owner, you don't want to begin a sleeping habit you will have a hard time correcting and you don't want to injure your dog by accident: It is recommended to give them a soft, warm, comfortable and safe dog bed.

The quality of the dog bed is vitally important. A poor quality bed can put strain on your dog's back and joints. It can also make sleeping uncomfortable and difficult. To have the correct dog bed, one must do a bit of searching. A Pomeranian will not feel safe in a dog bed that is made for a large dog. There are many companies that make dog beds specifically for small dogs. You will want to compare a few dog beds and choose one that is made of washable material and looks very soft and comfortable.

If you have already trained your dog to sleep in your bed and you want that to change it will take a bit of work. When it is time to go to sleep, have the dog bed right next to your's. Place your Pomeranian gently down and give her a chance to smell around and get used to this new thing! If she tries to leave, put a new fun toy on the cushion. This should keep her there a while. Dim the lights or only leave on a night light, so that she can see the toy but also know the signal for "sleep time". You may have to work at this a bit and have patience, but after a while your Pomeranian will get used to her new dog bed. After some time, your Pomeranian will discover that having their own special safe spot that is near you is the best place to sleep.
