Question:  My sister and I are both getting a Pomeranian puppy. And I was wondering if it is okay to introduce two puppies to a different world at one time. My father also has a Bullmastiff puppy.  Owner Emani, Pomeranian: Nila

Answer:  Hi Emani,

Yes, if both you and your sister are each getting a Pomeranian it is actually a great idea to introduce them to the home at the same time.  This will especially be great if the 2 Poms are from the same litter.  If the Poms are littermates, this will make the transition much easier for them.

Even if they are from different litters, having them learn house training, commands, and the general socialization into the world should be easier with 2 Poms.  If one of them learns something first, being so young, the 2nd one will mimic the 1st one!

However, do note that if 1 Pom does something unacceptable, the 2nd Pom may copy that also!

Therefore, both you and your sister must be very consistent with all of the training that you do for your puppies.

When 1 puppy has an "accident' the other can learn from that by seeing how you handle it.

We also suggest that with your father already having a dog, that testing be done first to make sure that his dog is tolerant to your new puppies.

It would be best to bring his dog over to visit the puppies before you bring them home.  Keep him on a leash and see how he reacts.  If he crouches down low, remains quiet or growls, in that frozen crouching position...this means he is ready to attack.

If he investigates the puppies but basically ignores them, this is a good sign and means that he does not see them as a threat.

Do keep in mind that this will change once the puppies are actually in the home. At that time, your father's dog is going to want to establish that he is the "Alpha Dog".

If one of the puppies were to challenge him in this, this could be dangerous for such a little Pom.
