Pomeranian Jealousy Behavior Issue & Training Solution

Understanding Pomeranian Jealous Behavior

A Pomeranian may show jealous behavior of other people or of other pets.  However, there are answers to both dilemmas. Most dogs will display this type of behavior because they are feeling vulnerable.

Any big displays of jealous behavior can be fixed by training a dog via socialization to what they consider to be a threat and training to show them that the new person or pet is not a threat to them.

A Pomeranian may consider any other person or pet to pose a threat to many things:

    * The bond between the Pom and their owners
    * The dog's personal belongings, such as her food and toys
    * The attention the dog is used to receiving
    * The safety of the home

It is very important to show your dog that they are safe and no one is taking their place as your best friend.

Let's begin with the bond

A Pomeranian may sulk and act moody upon a new person or pet entering into the family.  When a new person or a new pet enters into a person's life, it is sometimes easy to pay lots of attention to the new family member and the older dog feels left behind.  Show your Pomeranian that there is still a great bond between the 2 of you.   Do not stop doing all the things that you used to do: grooming, going for walks, etc.  Take time to cuddle, play and hug.

Personal belongings:
Food is a very important element to a dog's stable home life.  If a new person has entered the picture, be sure that you (or whoever normally feeds your Pom) still does so.  It is best if there is no interruption of dinnertime.  If a new pet has entered the picture it is vitally important that your Pomeranian has its own quiet and private area to eat their dog food and drink .  This dining spot should not be disturbed by anyone.  Another pet should not be allowed to wander over to it.  Your Pomeranian must be made to feel very secure and safe that they do not need to worry about their food being taken.

This also applies to toys, blankets and any other items that your Pom is attached to.  If there is another pet in the home, it would be great if they were best friends and shared everything; but this should not be expected and this should definitely not be forced.  Your Pomeranian needs to know that their belongings will always be their belongings and that no person or no other animal is a threat to taking them away.

Never
force 2 animals to play together, sleep in the same dog bed or share anything.  This will happen naturally and in time if the animals are both loved and cared for.  Most pets learn to become very good friends, when they are each feeling safe about their environment and they bond at their own pace.

Attention.   Whether you have a new human family member or a canine or feline family member, you must be aware that your Pomeranian did not ask for a larger family.  Your dog needs time to adjust.  You can help by making sure that you pay just as much attention to your dog as you did before. Even if your dog resists, take time to pay special attention just to the dog who is displaying negative behavior.   Even if this is going for a walk together or playing for 10 minutes without interruption.   A Pomeranian needs time to adjust to whatever new living arrangement is in place.  Show your Pom that you love him or her no matter how moody they get.

Safety: If jealousy is in reaction to a human, be sure to keep an eye on the interaction between your Pom and this person.  Perhaps the person is not aware of the need of treating a Pom gentle care and is attempting to play too rough?  Perhaps they think it is amusing to tease your Pom?   Stop any incorrect interaction and teach the correct way of treating a Pom.

If this jealousy is in reaction to another pet, keep a good eye out for what happens when they think you are not looking.  Perhaps the newer dog or cat is physical intimidating your Pom, thus causing the dog to act out?   Perhaps the new pet is taking your Pom's toys, which as we discussed above will cause your Pomeranian to feel threatened.

If your Pomeranian feels that a person or other pet is a threat to the home, time will fix this as your dog becomes used to the new situation and following the training methods will help a dog cope.
