Pomeranian Owners...
In this section, you will see what Pomeranian owners think about their dogs and be able to see many different stats about real Poms, giving straight from the owners.

Below you will see the results of many Pom polls....Asking everything from "What color Pom do you have?", to "The trick my Pomeranian does best is...." and SO much more!

Pomeranian Owners Running Errands with their Pom...
38% I DO bring my Pom with me, I carry him/ her in my arms
27% I DO bring my him or her with me, I  put them in my pocket book
18% I DO bring my Pom with me, I use a pet carrier
12% I DO bring my pup with me, I use a different method
5% I do NOT bring my Pomeranian with me

Personal Thoughts:  " I bring my little one with me as often as I can and carry her in my arms. Sometimes, I change my schedule around, just so that I can bring her with me. I've found that many stores that normally don't allow dogs, do not mind if I hold her in my arms because she's so tiny and cute!"

Personal Thoughts:  " I bring my Pom with me, but always have her walk on a leash, I want her to get exercise".

  Color Changes

64% My Pom's color has GREATLY changed from puppy to adult
31% My Pomeranian's color has changed slightly
5% My Pom's color has not changed at all

Personal Thoughts:  "From watching 4 dogs from under 1 year to adult, I noticed it was a good chance that the eventual color matched the color on the back of the ears (on orange/tan/red), which was always darker. Not 100%, as one dog has extremely thick undercoat which blocks the color somewhat, but you can see the shade on the ears is the same as the top coat, just the white is kind of overpowering the color"

Personal Thoughts:  "The breeder Elaine from Chelanes Poms warned me he was going through the "Puppy Uglies" but, to me he wasn't ugly at all"

Personal Thoughts: "My little girl went from a light tan to a rich brown color, but my male Pomeranian went from a light tan to a lighter tan"

Possessive Behavior
53% My Pom is VERY possessive of their belongings
35% My Pomeranian is only possessive of 1 certain item
12% My Pom is not possessive at all

Personal Thoughts: "My Pomeranian is possessive of only one thing: a sock!  My pup is a male but protects and acts as if this sock is a puppy that he is taking care of!"   Editor's Note:   This is "Nesting Behavior"....which is usually displayed by pregnant Poms. However,  it can also be seen in both males and females, as they choose to "protect" a certain item, just as if it were a puppy.  This behavior is not harmful and is perfectly normal, as long as the Pomeranian does not act overly aggressive in regard to the object.

The Trick My Pom Does Best is:
31 % Beg on Command
22% Roll over on Command
15% Other (see below!)
11% Fetch Objects I Ask For
9 % Bark on Command
7 % Sit on Command
5 % Sit and Stay on Command

Personal Thoughts:

Other: My Pom "gives me five" on command!

Other: My Pomeranian does: high five, high 10 and low 5, and rings the bell on back door to got to the bathroom

Begs on Command: Zachary begs whenever I bring in a bag of beggin strips!  Zachary is a very loyal, lovable Pomeranian. He even did tricks before I taught them to him! I cannot imagine life without him. I love my wittle snuggy-puss!

  Children

37% My Pom loves children and could play with them for hours
22% My Pomeranian likes playing with children, but can only take so much before he/she retreats to get a break
6% Mine only gets along with older children
4% My Pom doesn't particularly like children, but will behave if I keep an eye on him/her
3% Mine  has a very low tolerance for children
28% Mine is not good with children at all and will make that clear!

Personal Thoughts:

Loves Children: I have 2 Poms who absolutely love when the grandkids come over, we have 8 who range in age from 2 years to 11 years old.  Polly and Molly (our Poms) get so excited when the kids come over, it's as if they can hardly control themselves. They seem to have equal energy to the children!

Not Good with Children:
It may be because my Pom does not have a lot of contact with children, but whenever we walk by a child or a child wants to pet my Bella, she does a growl (not very loud) and seems to want to say "leave me alone!_.  She's never bitten anyone and will let a child pet her if I hold her in my arms, but I think she prefers the company of adults.

My Pomeranian weighs 5-6 pounds: The  breeder said my Pom would be 4.5 pounds, but he is closer to 5.5, I think he is perfect but would have preferred the weight she stated because he was an adult when he was sold.

Sleeps in my Bed:  My Pom cried the first few nights in his crate, so I relented and let him sleep in my bed. Now I like it, and we're both happy!

Sleeps in my Bed: If you do not want a pet on your furniture or in your bed, then a Pom is not for you !

We Asked Pomeranian Owners; Was a Pom your 1st choice?...
89% Yes
11% No

Personal Thoughts:

"With our latest POM (he\'s our third) we distinctly did NOT want another Pom because we were still grieving the loss of our beloved Sadie two years prior. We knew we were getting a rescue from the shelter and I looked at the doggy \'mug shots\' daily...I even went once to meet a Lhasa...but he wasn't the one. Then one day at lunch I saw our Joshua...he looked just like our Sadie did...and I just knew he was meant for our family. Everything worked out perfectly and 6 year old Joshua joined our family the next day. He is the BEST little guy ever and we love him as much as sweet Sadie"

"I used to go to a friend of my parents when I was a child who had 2 poms. From a very young age, I always knew that was the dog for me! I loved their beautiful fluffy coats, and they are always smiling!"

"I always thought I wanted a larger dog. One I got my first pom that was it. I was in love."

"Yes, Because they are the most beautiful dog breed, PERIOD."

Where I Obtained My Pom From...

64% From a Breeder & picked his/her up in person
16% From a Rescue or Shelter
9% Another Way
8% From a Breeder & Had him/her shipped to me
3% From a friend

Personal Thoughts:

From Breeder: We traveled a 400 mile round trip TWICE for our pom. First trip to pick her and see with parents and second time to collect her. I would not buy a dog without seeing the dam and sire in person first, that way you can be sure of the any health issues and also question the breeder in person. Rather than question them in an email when they can think about the answers before give them to you!!

From Rescue Group:
Very hard time finding a Pom i wanted. I'm very happy I adopted my Pom from an adoption center.

Another Way
: Jazzmine was left at a boarding facility with false contact info. They did not return for her. After 30 days of being unable to find her owner, she was mine!

Another Way: My Pom was a stray, but as it turns out I needed her, as much as she needed me :)

Housebreaking

2 %Took less than 1 month
4 % Took 2 months
27% Took 3 months
18 % Took 4 months
1% Took me more than 4 months
10 % I don't seem to be done, my Pom doesn't seem to understand what to do!
12% My Pom is still young & not housebroken yet, but it's going GOOD
26 % My Pom is still young & not housebroken yet, but it's going TERRIBLE !

Personal Thoughts:

I don't seem to be done! : For 2 years I've been taking her outside to pee/poo.. when she goes.. I clap and say good girl! she wags her tail.. but then she still has slip ups.

It took 3 months: We had a hard time in the beginning. Then I introduced the litter box and the female poms got the hang of it but NOT the male. Then I took away the litter box and introduced training pads and again the females took to it but the male will only go potty outside.

What Color is Your Pom?

1 % Exotic color (pink or lavender)
34 % Classic orange
27% A light color (white, cream, cream sable, etc)
22 % A dark color (black, black & tan, black sable, etc)
16 % A Parti

Personal Thoughts:

Color Change:My Pomeranian is orange sable. He was very dark sable as a pup, then turned completely orange, now orange sable. I would love to get a chocolate brown Pom some day!

No Color Change: I chose my Pom based on personality! He is still young so his color hasn't changed as of yet! If I was to get another Pom, it wouldn't matter what color he or she was!

Type of Face

82%
My Pomeranian has a Fox face
11% My Pom has a Teddy Bear face
5% Mine has a Baby Doll face
2% I'm not sure what type of face my Pom has

Personal Thoughts:

Teddy Bear: I'm a Pomeranian owner who has 1 Pom with a Fox face & 1 with a Teddy Bear face, I think all faces should be accepted as the AKC standard

Fox Face: I own four and I love the fox face! I love all the Pom's it wouldn't matter to me , I just happen to pick the one's that had the fox face.

When I Groom or Brush My Pom, Their Behavior Is...
12% Very Good
12% Excellent
7 % Good
58 % Very good, BUT only when I give treats!
11% Not good at all

Personal Thoughts:

Very Good: Except for clipping nails, but he is getting much better. Also, he does better if there is no audience. He is still a little wiggly, but responds to voice commands. He is awesome when he is being given a bath and being blow-dried. He also is very good for the little scissor trimming on his feet, hocks and ears. I use a water/conditioner spray bottle to mist him when brushing him several times a week that keeps his fur more lustrous.

Very Good
: My pom behaves better for me than the groomer because I pet and talk sweetly before and during the grooming session and praise him after he is groomed.

ONLY Good if I Give Treats:  My Pom puppy, Taz, thinks the brush is a chew toy! But if I keep a treat in my hand and let him lick at it he will sit still and allow me to brush him out. I think this method will help as he gets older to enjoy being brushed.

We Asked Pomeranian Owners....AKC or Not? And do you care?

0%  I need my Pom to be AKC registered, I'm planning on showing
22% I do not need/want my Pom to be AKC registered, but I DO want my Pom's parents to be AKC
29% My Pom is/ I want my Pom to be AKC registered
49% It does not matter to me if my Pom is AKC registered

Personal Thoughts:

Pro AKC:  I'm glad that my Pom is AKC registered, because then I know that she came from great parents.

Doesn't Matter: The only thing that matters is that I love my Pom so much, and she loves me. Whether or not she is AKC registered has no significance to me
.
