Pomeranians Eating Bananas, Pineapple, Strawberries & Tuna Fish

Food Questions

While we do offer a lot of information regarding general feeding and also some very detailed pages regarding specific foods that owners wonder about such as cheese (all types), eggs (either scrambled, whole or raw), orange slices, the popular fun crunchy snacks of peanuts or some popcorn, meats such as pork and seafood such as shrimp, let's do a quick 'yes' and 'no' to these other food additions that we've been receiving emails about:

Note: Please remember that when giving a snack to your Pom, if possible it should be saved for reward. If you are teaching commands, this will ensure that your Pom is hungry enough to see the treat as a proper reward for learning and listening. If your Pom is already fully trained (commands, housebreaking, heeling, etc.), use snacks and special treats as rewards to reinforce good behavior… Whether it is to say 'good job!' when your Pom comes when called or to say, 'You're being good!' when your Pom sits still for grooming, reserving snacks for incentive and emphasis on good behavior is a much better choice than feeding him/ her at random times.
banana half cut into slices
Can a Pomeranian eat bananas? Yes, Pomeranians can eat banana and it is actually very healthy. You will just want to limit the amount eaten because as with many foods, too much is not good.

Over ingestion can cause stomach upset, digestion issues and even prompt the growth of bad bacteria. Adding a dab of peanut butter makes for an excellent special treat. How much should you give your Pomeranian? 1/4 of a banana is the perfect amount for a healthy snack, so you may want to choose a time when you will want to eat the other 3/4's of it.
pineapple sliced
Can a Pomeranian eat pineapple? Yes, Pomeranian puppies and dogs can eat pineapples and there are actually a few reasons why this is a recommended snack. First, it is rich in vitamins with good levels of Vitamin C, fiber and manganese.

Secondly, it contains a bromelain, which helps a dog's body digest and process protein. There are unproven theories that consumption of this fruit will decrease cocrophagia (when a dog eats his feces) due to the fact that the bromelain allows the body absorb more protein, thus leaving less of it in the feces and in turn making the feces less appealing to ingest.
What is a good amount of pineapple to feed to a Pomeranian? Added to a meal, 4 bite-sized chunks is good. When giving as a reward, if you cut a pre-made chunk in half, each 1/2 piece can then be given.
Note: as with many sweet fruits, it is high in fructose, therefore you can give your Pom some, but do mix it up and rotate with other types of snacks as well.
small pile of strawberries
Can a Pomeranian eat strawberries? Yes, Poms can eat strawberries and as with most berries, they are rather healthy. They contain good levels of Vitamin C, fiber and antioxidants.

While rubbing crushed strawberry on your teeth or creating a mix of this fruit with baking soda is purported to whiten one's teeth, there is no proof that simply eating one once in a while will whiten a dog's teeth.
As an addition to the strawberry question, a Pomeranian can also eat strawberry yogurt (do not choose low calorie because artificial sweeteners can upset the stomach!)

And limit the amount given because it is dairy and lactose can upset the stomach and it is high in sugar), strawberry ice-cream ( again, a small amount due to the lactose and sugar) and even strawberry jam or jelly (choose natural jelly or jam - adding a dab to a healthy biscuit for a special treat)
Can a Pomeranian eat tuna fish? The quick answer is yes, but you'll want to take time to choose the right tuna fish for your Pomeranian.
Fish in general is very healthy for dogs and can be a great source of healthy Omega-3, however some varieties can be too high in fat. The key to keep in mind is that tuna is normally classified as light meat or white meat. Light meat tuna often contains much more fat than white meat tuna.

Albacore is a great choice for lean, white meat tuna that a Pom can eat. Also be careful to purchase water-packed tuna and not oil-packed. Also, commercial brands cook their tuna twice; specialty brands often only cook it once; and once is better since it leaves more Omega-3.
can of tuna fish
You'll want to offer variety in the meals that you give your Pom, but a nice serving of tuna fish with some raw baby carrots and a bit of plain rice is a great lunch or dinner choice.
What is your Pom's animal sign? And what does that mean?
